Memories
__________

(ERIC is sitting in the up right corner of the stage, facing stage right. LAURA, who is holding a large knife, enters left and very slowly moves toward ERIC throughout the course of the play. MAYGANN is sitting down center. JASON enters and stands near MAYGANN.)

MAYGANN
When I was younger I saw--

JASON
When I was younger my misconceptions about sex were just unbelieveable. I remember when I found out that two people had to be together in some state of undress for sex to occur. I was mortified. How immodest, I thought. You mean naked? Together? For how long? Shrouded in mystery.

(JASON exits. LINDSAY enters.)

MAYGANN
When--

LINDSAY
When I was younger, I'd think forward to the year 2000 and wonder how old I'd be and think that that was really old.

(LINDSAY exits. MARK enters.)

MAYGANN
When I was younger--

MARK
When I was younger I drew pictures and wrote in the bullietin during church. As the church service progressed, I'd make marks indicating how far we were, checking each event off: Prelude, Call to Worship, Hymn number one, Pastoral Prayer, Hymn number two, Prayer for Illumination, Scripture Reading, Sermon...until it was over.

(MARK exits. AMY enters.)

MAYGANN
When I was young--

AMY
When I was younger I was on my moped going down the street and I met a group of about thirty-five Hell's Angels on their choppers. I don't think I've ever felt so small. Actually, that didn't happen to me. It happened to my friend. Actually a friend of a friend.

(AMY exits. During the following line, LAURA slowly plunges the knife deep into ERIC's neck. ERIC does not react.)

MAYGANN
When I was younger I saw a murder. A woman slowly walked across a stage and plunged a knife deep into a man. That memory has been with me for as long as I can remember. And now it's yours.

"Memories" was originally performed as a part of the play Nobody Move and Nobody Gets Hurt!!! at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa and in a number of cities in Ontario, Canada.
